What is exemplification?
The standard definition of exemplification in Dictionary.com is: “Something that exemplifies; an illustration or example”. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/exemplification In writing it can be used as evidence supporting a specific argument or as a pattern of development for the whole text. Why use examples? Examples are used to give a piece of information that is representative of the whole pie. They can help clarify a complex or abstract concept. How do you develop an exemplification text? When constructing an exemplification text you work from a generalization about the subject and move to a specific example or examples that make the abstract more concrete or the general issue more specific. |
As a rule of thumb, you may use several small examples to support your main point or thesis or you may use one extended example that is comprehensive enough to support you main point or thesis.
